Do the valet drivers keep the tips or they give them to their boss or supervisor?

A quality valet company DOES NOT collect or keep the tips the valets have earned. Those that do, and there are many, will understandably have lower employee morale and a lesser quality of service. Valet teams will often "pool" their tips, so that all share in the benefit of the good tippers. Stay away from those companies that keep their employees tips.

In some states it is actually illegal to collect and keep the gratuities of the workers. If you work for a valet company that practices collecting your tips and redistributing them later, you might want to check with your state's Department of Labor on whether this is legal within your state. If it is not, your company could owe you a nice sum of money in back wages.

The tips are usually shared among all the valet parking drivers. There was only once when we were not required to share the tips, but most of the time you share among each other.

I've been involved in a few different types of tip sharing policies with the valet companies I've worked for. The first company would have their employees split tips evenly when the first valet would be cut from their shift. This would result in the closer(s) to make substantially more than the first cut valet. The second valet company used a hourly tip rate. At the end of the night all tips would be combined in one pool and divided by the total number of hours that all the valets worked at that shift. That number would be anywhere from 5-50 dollars an hour depending on the restaurant location, day of the week, event, etc. This would result in all valets earning the same amount per hour for that shift. I have seen some companies taking all the tips from their valets from that night, and then using that money to pay them back for the valets minimum wage state requirement. When there is a place where the valets get to individually keep the tips that they've collected from the night, it usually results in hostility and anger amongst the valets trying to return every car they can in the night.
