I'm doing a preliminary study of the top 20 airports to see how they have incorporated valet parking services into their ground transportation/parking operations. There are several questions that management has posed for me to research (by this Wednesday!) and determine the feasibility of offering valet services at Sky Harbor International Airport someday.

As we well know, anything is possible here at the airport. However, the primary reason for gathering this information is to understand what exactly valet operations would entail from the ground up. Armed with that information, we would know what potential scenarios, contingencies, problems and alternatives to look when initiating a proposal process in this market.

Below are a list of questions I would like to research, along with some of the airports I will be contacting. Any names/numbers of your staff who would be able to assist me with this study at various other airports for which you offer valet services would be greatly appreciated. I will then contact them individually to get a broad idea of how the valet system is run at their facility.

1. Who operates your valet service - Your parking company, a private company, the airport?

2. How are vehicles cued for drop-off for valet service?

3. Where are the vehicles stored?

4. How are the areas for valet segregated from general parking?

5. How are fees collected or compensation provided for the valet service provider?

6. Are other services bundled with valet such as luggage handling, wheelchair assistance, vehicle service/detailing?

7. How is the airport compensated for each vehicle utilizing valet and/or other services?

8. Is the service popular with the traveling public (longer-term parking)? Is it used more by travelers or people picking up (short-timers)?

9. How is liability handled, i.e. theft or vandalism?

10. What are insurance requirements of operating company?

11. Did the airport issue an Request for Proposal for this service? If so, may we have a copy?

Since I only have a limited amount of time to complete this study, any contact info you have would be appreciated ASAP so I can start making phone calls. Also, if you have any ideas of your own regarding ways this program would operate at SKY (which I'm sure you do!), we can build on those as well.
