Valet parking is an extremely convenient service that most guests
or clients appreciate when visiting a business in an especially
busy area of town. What most people are unsure about is what is
considered an appropriate tip for someone entrusted with parking
your car.
There are several thoughts on this subject with one thing in common
– you are expected to tip the valet
on your way in and on the way out. The reason for this is simple –
the same valet who served you when you went in may not be the same
one who serves you on the way out; and even if you do get the same
valet on your way out, it is still customary to tip them a second
time as they are performing a service for you on both occasions –
the first by parking your car, the second by fetching your car for
you.
The amount you tip a valet parking attendant generally depends
on how generous you are feeling although $2 on the way in and out
is the acceptable minimum. The amount you tip your valet will also
depend on what kind of car you are driving and how paranoid you
are about where it is parked. If you are driving an expensive car
and want it parked in one of the premium spots up front then you
can expect to tip your valet anywhere between $5 and $10 dollars
both ways. Some people who drive really expensive cars will even
go as high as tipping their valet attendant $20 both ways. What
you are comfortable giving is entirely up to you, although you can
assume that the higher a tip the better your parking spot will be.
Aside from tipping your valet also remember to be polite and to
thank the person for parking and fetching your car – after
all they are saving you time and trouble by doing the job for you.
